THE CHURCH WAS PACKED. Abby had a hard time finding a seat. It was nondenominational like her own home church, so she felt right at home. Pastor Terry was young and engaging. Abby enjoyed listening to him. His message was about forgiveness, how it’s needed for the simplest and smallest irritations to the largest insults and hurts.
After the service she waited until he’d finished with the people in his congregation, those who’d come forward to speak to him or to ask for prayer, and then she approached him and introduced herself.
“Ah, you’re one of the people looking for Padre Mike.” He held her hand in both of his. “I’d love to talk to you about him. Are you in a hurry?”
“No, not a big hurry, but—”
“Good, then join us for lunch. I’m famished and my kids are waiting to eat. I don’t want to short you. We have lunch here on the campus on Sundays.”
Before Abby could answer, a boy about ten or eleven, Luke’s daughter’s age, ran up and grabbed Pastor Terry’s hand. “Come on; it’s time to eat.”
Terry let the boy drag him off and Abby followed.
Lunch was a table full of homemade dishes, a potluck. Terry explained while he and Abby made their way through the food line, filling their plates, that this was how the staff fellowshipped after service every Sunday.
“We break bread, we talk about the church, but mostly we relax. Let our kids play, and just be good friends.”
It was a relatively young group of people and a lot of small children. Terry introduced her to everyone, which included his wife and two boys. Abby felt comfortable with the group and she was glad Terry had asked her to lunch. It made her miss her home church, and Luke, a little less.
“So you want to find Padre Mike,” Terry said as they sat and began to eat their meal. “What do you want with him?”
Abby nodded, her mouth full of a wonderful-tasting chicken casserole. She swallowed. “I would like to talk to him about something that happened a long time ago in Templeton, where he grew up.”
“He’s not in trouble?”
“Not at all.”
Terry chewed his food and looked ready to ask another question. When he swallowed, he asked, “What’s the whole story? Can you tell me that from the beginning?”
“It’s complicated.”
“That’s okay. I’ve got food. I’m ready for a good story.”
His wife brought him a cup of coffee, and Abby put her fork down. She told him everything, from the Triple Seven murders to the escape of Kelsey Cox.
“That’s the story, and since I’m up here working on Ciara’s murder case, I wanted to find him and ask him a few questions.”
He stared at her in amazement. “Wow. That’s incredible. You really think the First Lady of California is basically a murderer?”
“I don’t know that I could prove she ever pulled a trigger, but I do believe she ordered my mother’s murder. And then when my dad got away, she ordered the restaurant burned down, which resulted in the death of another man.
